Baby Hinny Born on Small Scottish Island
When Roddy and Mandy MacLeod decided to start a family, they never imagined their first child would be born on a tiny, remote Scottish island. But that's exactly where baby Hinny made her debut on March 5, 2018.
The MacLeods live on the Isle of Barra, one of the Outer Hebrides islands located off the west coast of Scotland. The population of Barra is just over 1,000 people, so when Roddy went into labor early one morning, there was no hospital or doctor on the island.
Fortunately, a neighbor who was a midwife was able to help Mandy deliver the baby girl. Hinny is the first baby born on Barra in four years, and she's already become a local celebrity.
"We are all so proud of her. Hinny is our little miracle," Mandy said.
Hinny Calf Born at Maryland Zoo
The Maryland Zoo announced the birth of a hinny calf on October 15, 2018. The female calf was born to first-time parents, a hinny named Maya and a Zebra stallion named Alex.
"We are thrilled to welcome the newest addition to the Maryland Zoo family," said Mary Catherine Backer, general curator at the Maryland Zoo. "Hinnies are such a rare sight and we are excited to see this little one grow up and interact with her dad, Alex, and mom, Maya."
A hinny is the result of breeding a horse and a donkey. They are typically intermediate in size to a horse and donkey and are identifiable by their long ears. Hinnies are considered gentle animals that make good pets.
The Maryland Zoo has two other hinnies on exhibit, both rescued from neglectful situations. Gizmo is an eight-year-old hinny who came from a roadside attraction in North Carolina and Harley is a two-year-old hinny who was found abandoned in West Virginia.

Rare Baby Hinny Born in Missouri
In a farm in Missouri, a rare baby hinny was born. The little male baby is the first of its kind to be born in the state in over 100 years.
The hinny is a crossbreed between a horse and a donkey. They are not as common as mules, which are hybrids of a horse and a female donkey. Hinnies are usually smaller than mules and are thought to be less stubborn than their mule counterparts.
This little hinny is already quite a celebrity on the farm where he was born. Everyone is eager to get a glimpse of the cute little guy and see how he grows up.
Miniature Horse-Donkey Hybrid Born in Spain
## A Miniature Horse-Donkey Hybrid Was Born in Spain and the Internet Is Freaking Out
In November of 2017, a miniature horse and donkey hybrid was born in Castellón, Spain. While the animal is not the first of its kind, it has generated a lot of buzz on social media due to its unique appearance.
The hybrid was born to a miniature horse mother and a donkey father. He stands just 2 feet tall and weighs only 25 pounds. His coat is a mix of brown and black, and he has a long tail like his donkey father. Unlike his parents, however, he has four legs instead of two.
Since being born, the little donkey has been the talk of the town in Castellón. Many people have come to see him and take pictures, and he has even become something of a tourist attraction. Some locals have even started calling him "El Caballo de los Dioses," which translates to "The Horse of the Gods."
While some people are fascinated by this little donkey hybrid, others find him bizarre or ugly. What do you think?
First Baby Hinny Born in the UK in 50 Years
A baby hinny was born in the UK for the first time in 50 years on January 2, 2018. The healthy colt was delivered at the Hillside Animal Sanctuary in Norfolk.
Hinnies are rare hybrids of a male donkey and a female horse. They are usually smaller than donkeys or horses and are not as popular as other hybrids such as mules.
The last hinny born in the UK was in 1968. It is not clear why there has been a lack of hinny births in recent years, but Sanctuary manager Simon Coldwell suspects that it may be due to more people breeding donkeys and horses separately.
"The fact that this is the first hinny born in the UK in over 50 years just goes to show how rare they are," said Coldwell. "We're really excited to have her here at the Sanctuary."
The baby hinny has been named Star and is currently being hand-reared by sanctuary staff.
